How many times have you got emails that were from someone in your contact list thinking “Oh! I haven’t heard from him/her for a while” and when you opened it it’s just spam or a scam?
Then later on you ask the sender about it and he/she has no clue what you are talking about. Well… let me tell you the sender is part of a botnet. Do you know what a botnet is?
Let me explain in the simplest way.
Botnets are networks of personal computers infected by malware and remote controlled by crooks. Botnets are used to send junk email (spam), attack websites, and distribute more malware, and other things.
The malware engaged by botnets can infect your computer, turning it into a “bot” or “zombie.” In other words, your computer can become part of the botnet, helping criminals do their dirty work, without you even knowing! Authorities can track and assume that you are sending these malicious e-mails. The malware’s traffic may slow your Internet connection. It can also affect the speed of your computer, since it is working overtime; does it sound familiar?
Some of the malware will also install additional malware on your computer or attempt to steal your passwords and account numbers.
Because criminals want their botnets to have as many infected computers as possible, they try to hide their malware so you won’t notice it.
Make sure you are protected and do your part by keeping a clean machine and deleting suspicious emails and links.Source: blog.botrevolt.com
